Winterizing Your Septic System Before an Iowa Freeze

Central Iowa frost depth regularly reaches well below the standard burial depth of an older septic line, which is why a system that's run fine for years can suddenly freeze during a hard cold snap, usually the pipe between the house and the tank, or the tank lid itself if it's shallow. A few things actually help: keep the lid area free of snow removal that compacts snow into ice over it (loose snow insulates, packed snow doesn't), avoid letting the grass over the line get scalped short heading into winter, and don't let the system sit unused for long stretches in a vacant farm property, since regular water flow keeps the line from fully freezing. If you're on a system that's frozen before, insulating the lid and the run to the house before the first hard freeze is cheaper than an emergency thaw call in January. If it's already frozen and backing up, that's an emergency call, not a wait-it-out situation.
