Septic Tank Materials Compared: Concrete, Plastic, and Fiberglass

Concrete is by far the most common septic tank material on existing Marshall County properties, and for good reason, it's heavy enough to resist floating in wet soil, holds up for decades, and is what most local installers have worked with the longest. Plastic (polyethylene) tanks are lighter and easier to transport to a hard-to-reach farm site, resist cracking better than older concrete, but need to be installed and backfilled carefully since they can shift or float in high water table conditions if that's not accounted for. Fiberglass tanks split the difference, lighter than concrete, generally more rigid than plastic, but less common locally, which can mean a longer wait on parts if something ever needs servicing. For most new installs on Marshall County acreages we still recommend concrete unless site access specifically favors a lighter tank, mainly because it's the material every local pumper and inspector is most familiar with.
